The meaning of life?

The meaning of life?

One of the themes that struck me while writing this book, is the picture of life without our Creator at the centre.

Directionless.

Meaningless.

Void of hope.

That’s because when God created us, he also created good works for us to do.

Ephesians 2:10 says “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

A life without Him is like living a life without receiving the “brief.” I wonder if this is why so many people seem stumped by the question: “What is the meaning of life?” They never got their brief, or perhaps they were busy writing their own, flawed version.

A brief acts like a roadmap. Where we are going and how we get there. What needs to be done along the way. A brief outlines the specific outcomes, projects, constraints, and success criteria needed.

For years I had a recurring nightmare. I had it a few weeks ago actually. In my dream I would arrive late on the first day of term at my high school. In so doing, I failed to attend my form class and failed to receive my timetable.

Running erratically upstairs and downstairs, from classroom to classroom I desperately peered through windows attempting to recognise any classmates from previous terms that may indicate that that was the place I was meant to be.

Noone even looked up from their desk.

I would always awaken from that dream with my heart racing, panicked and shaken.

I didn’t receive the timetable. I didn’t get the brief. I was without direction, meaning or hope.

There is good news. As Christians, we have the brief. Praise God! We have the timetable. The tricky thing is, it’s often just point one of a ten-point brief, or only the lessons until Monday lunchtime on the school timetable! But there is much comfort in knowing that, as the famous hymn writer penned, “I don't know what the future holds, I know who holds the future.”

That gives us direction, meaning and hope, or better said, Jesus gives us direction, meaning and hope.

Called Beyond is a platform to explore what God is calling us into. May we tarry and sit with him, prayerfully, attentively. He will make known his plans for us. Next is to step in to those plans knowing he will fully equip us with everything we need to carry out the work he has for us.

Amen?
